Snooker basics, a revised and complete article.

Snooker is a game of strategy and expertise where in every shot, the player tries to pot a colored object ball with a white colored cue-ball using a cue-stick as the striking force generating device. If you have ever played a game of snooker, you must have realized that there's so much to it, and once you start it, you won't be able to stop playing it.

There have been lots of times when me and some friends have played snooker for many hours continuously. Its like we are researching something, and of course have nothing else to do. We enter the snooker parlor in the day and come out at evening or sometimes even at night.

This game is not about playing a few powerful shots and trying to impress everybody with just a couple of shots, though even the best hustlers sometimes just do that, but at the highest levels, it is about making points and not letting your opponent get out of his seat, except when you have left him snookered or left the cue-ball tight on the cushions. Well, this would be the ideal case and then you would be able to defeat everybody, but I think you get the point ;)

You can score a maximum of 147 points in the game in a single run. If you start with a free ball, then you can score 155 points in the break.

The basic rules.
You have to pot a red ball (worth 1 point) at the start of every shot, followed by any colored ball of your choice from yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black ( these 6 balls are worth 2 - 7 points starting from yellow - 2, till black - 7.) Then another red, and another color. Whenever you miss, it is your opponent's turn, and he does the same. This process is repeated throughout the game, until there are no reds left on the table. When this situation arises, you have to pot the colors in order from yellow till black for a total of 27 points. Every shot you play will involve you shooting a red ball first, unless your opponent fouled in the previous shot and you are left with a snooker or cannot see the ball-on, or in this case red from both sides properly. In that case you can select a free-ball.

Every potted red remains inside the pocket, where-as every colored ball is replaced after a successful pot. This goes on, until all the fifteen reds are inside the pockets. Then you have to start potting the other colored balls (lowest to highest valued) starting from yellow (worth 2 points), then green, brown, blue, pink and finally black (worth 7 points)

So a successful 147 ( the highest score achievable without the initial free ball ) would include potting
15 reds and 15 blacks, then all the colors, so that is [(1+7)x(15) + (2+3+4+5+6+7)] = 147.

The basics ->

Bridges

V-shaped bridge - This bridge

Curly bridge

Rail-Bridge (Tight situation, everyone fears it)

Over the ball bridge

Pocket bridge

This is such a game where even someone who makes a score of just 20 in almost every turn can defeat ANYBODY, if his safeties are extremely good, and he is careful all the time.
Likewise, a player, who even makes big breaks in every game may easily lose to an opponent if his safeties are not good, or if he stumbles a few times at the crucial moment.

Let me tell you that I can give you tips on how to play snooker, if you are a beginner, intermediate, an advanced, or maybe even an expert level player. I can say that I am an advanced level player and yet to reach the expert and master levels. I usually make 30-35, with OK safeties (I have made 70-80 at times and sometimes my safeties are great as well), but enough about me, let us continue.

Snooker is a beautiful game which utilizes 22 balls; 15 reds, 6 different colored balls, and one white ball.
The 6 colored balls are colored yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black; in ascending order of value.

Yellow is worth 2 points, green 3 and so on. Each red ball is worth 1 point. The aim of the game is to accumulate the maximum number of points till the end of the game.

The player must pot a red on every odd numbered shot of every turn. On every even numbered turn, he must pot one of the six available colors. A turn ends when the player misses a ball.

BALL WORTH !

Yellow - 2 points
Green - 3 points
Brown - 4 points
Blue - 5 points
Pink - 6 points
Black - 7 points

Course of the game:

1.Snooker break off
The first shot of every snooker game is the break shot, and it is played from the D either from between the brown and yellow to come to the baulk end after bouncing off the right side cushion, or from between the brown and green to come to the baulk end after bouncing off the left side cushion. For starters, play it keeping the cue-ball around halfway between yellow and brown, with a little bit of right hand english and try and come 2 or 3 cushions behind the yellow or brown.
For more details on this basic and few advanced break-offs click here.

2. Snooker breaks or runs
A run is the no of points you score in one turn. When you never miss, you score the most points possible (147) and there are a some legendary players who have made this score in an innings, which is the highest score achievable. Among these legends are Ronnie O' Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams and age old legends such as Cliff Thorburn, Terry Griffiths, and Steve Davis. If the free ball rule is on, you can very well make a maximum break of 155. I don't think it has been made in an international meeting, which they can count, maybe in a hustler's convention or at some street snooker showdown by a shark?, i mean it can be made, you just need the right setup presented to a great player, and the probability is pretty good for that.

3. Safeties
If you think that potting a ball is risky, you can play a safety and come behind the baulk colours if there is no loose red in the baulk. You can also do all other types of safeties such as potting a red from near the black in one of the long baulk pockets, and staying behind all the reds and even good position for black. This is known as an attacking safety, that is, you play for the pot, but safe as well, so even if you miss, your opponent has no easy shot.
You can check out the some safety shots explained here.

4. Snooker
A snooker situation arises when you or your opponent is left with no choice but to play the ball on either by hitting a cushion first or by playing a masse shot. Different situations will be discussed later on, in this blog, so keep checking :)

5. Free ball
When your opponent fouls and your ball on cannot be hit half ball on both sides directly, then you can nominate a free ball. If you pot the free ball, you will be given points according to the ball-on. However, you are not allowed to snooker behind the free ball. More lessons to follow on how to play snooker.

6. Potting the colours
After no reds remain on the table, you have to start potting the colors in increasing order of value starting from yellow all the way to black, totalling to 27 points. Check the list near the top of this article to know more.
The perfect game of snooker. We have all dreamt of it, some of us have experienced phases of it, yet very few have mastered the art. This is an area which I might not be able to fully explain but I have good hold of it now, after struggling, a lot.

You might often wonder, why do you miss a particular shot. Well, there are actually just a few factors which determine whether you are great at the game all the time or not. And let me tell you that they are not easy to achieve. You must practice well and play well all the time!!!

Do you always?
1. Decide the shot, and initial and final position of the cue ball.
2. Play the shot, EXACTLY as you thought it to be. Well at times if a situation is hard to get out of and you cannot say play that quarter ball thin blue AND land in position, then you might go for an easier green or brown ball and come back from the baulk towards the pink area.
3. Continue the run for as long as you want to or the competition demands.
4. Play safe when it is meant to be played safe.
5. Leave your opponent snookered at least 6-7 times out of 10?

Well, all this is easier said than done and takes lots of time, patience, practice and learning capabilities.

For starters, you can --
1. Decide the shot, aim, get in position and just shoot. Well not like a robot, but I guess you get my point :)
2. If you want wish to master the art, you must ultimately know how to play all shots humanly possible. If this seems too hard now, you can start with the basic shots, and if any other shot comes up, just play safe.
3. You must avoid all distractions. No one else should be messing around as well.
4. Learn to apply chalk properly. Just rub on it gently, so that a thin layer of it forms on the surface. Then try to play a straight in stun shot. Next try to play a spin shot (deep screw or high follow would be nice). The point is, that these two shots along with shots involving extreme left and right hand english, require that your tip must be properly chalked. Dont worry about doing this all the time though, because after a while, you will automatically know how much chalk you need to apply.

5. Here is a list I have created on how to proceed to learn snooker starting from beginner level

Learn the basic pots, i.e. half ball, three quarter ball, one quarter ball and full ball (not a cut technically) Play all these shots without any spin on the white ball whatsoever. Try to play many variations of these shots, all over the table for a few days at least.

Learn your first spin shot, the stun shot. Hit the cue ball just a little bit below center with decent speed, to stop the CB right there if it is a straight in shot. For angled shots, the cue ball travels at right angles to the path travelled by the object ball.

After you have mastered the stun shot, you can safely learn to play screw back, follow, stun run through and the drag shot. Learn them one by one for the best effect.

Now after you have all these weapons in your arsenal, you can start to learn about the path the cue ball travels after hitting the rails. Two easy looking yet game defining skills which you will need to master are running and reverse english. These two will ultimately help you to calculate the path your cue ball needs to travel 4-5 or even more rails. For that you can learn the diamond system.

Next learn to play safeties. There are lots of defensive strategies out there. Master them all to be really good at cue ball sports.

Next you can learn kick shots and bank shots. Start from one rail shots, then gradually move on to two, three, four and even 5 railed shots. Some "experts" might disagree, but I suggest that you at least practice even the difficult shots well, because you never know, they might actually come in a match you play.

After this you can learn the jump and masse shots. To play a jump shot, elevate your cue stick about 30 degrees, then hit the cue ball medium-high speed and then hit it just a little below center (The center which you see after raising the stick and aiming from above). This will take some practice and jumping heavier balls might require to use a jump cue. The masse shot can be played again by raising your cue stick around 30 degrees then aiming it medium-bottom on the face of the cue ball as seen from above (30 degrees or so high). Now, if you want to curve the cue ball to the left, then use left english along with medium bottom, and if you want to curve it to the right use right english along with medium bottom.

Now you know most of if not all the shots in cue ball games. You can start to really play games seriously from now.

Next start playing different types of cue ball games on different types of tables. If you are unsure, you can start with 8 ball on an english table. Now I'm not saying that 8 ball is easy to master, but it sure is easier to start with. Play a few games of 8 ball for some time, say a few days, then you can start to learn other games such as 9 ball, straight pool, bank pool etc. The list is endless. After a few days, you can move on to the bigger snooker and billiards table and either stick with or keep your options open on both the tables.

Next for increasing your game to even greater levels, you can start playing practice drills as per your cue ball game of choice. One golden rule among practice drills is that you have to set all the balls again as they were even if you miss one single pot.

Hope this helps you to become a better player at the game.

The object ball (OB) can be hit at 5 primary locations. Full ball, half ball, three quarter ball, quarter ball, and thin cut.

Full ball hit literally means hitting the OB head on such that the CB and the OB travel in the same line.

A half ball hit is when the aiming point is one of the edges of the OB.

If the aiming point is between a full ball and a half ball, then it is a three quarter ball hit.

If the aiming point is between a half ball and a miss, then it is a quarter ball hit.

Any hit thinner than a quarter ball hit can be called a thin cut.

Look at the images below to fully understand all these hits. There's not much to it, just a few basic things to remember. In time, you will be able to recognize the different angles just by glancing at the shot. Keep practicing and learning is what I must say.

An object ball (OB) is said to be hit full ball, when the cue ball (CB) collides head on with it. Look at the following two shots. You will notice that you can either screw straight back, or follow straight ahead in both these shots. To do anything else, you will have to aim a little off center and search for the edges of the pockets, which is not recommended as it difficult than a normal shot. In most situations, you should not end up full ball on the object ball.

When the CB and the OB contact each other, in such a way that they travel the same distance
afterwards, unless any or both of the two is pocket first and / or one or both of them hit another ball or group of balls, it is called a half ball hit. In other words, the OB is said to be hit half ball, when the aiming point on it is exactly one of its edges. Both balls will achieve the same speed and travel the same distance for a perfect half ball hit. You will notice that if you hit the blue half ball, to pocket it into the center, the white will go in-off in one of the corner pockets. The half ball hit causes the CB to deflect the greatest unless any extra top or bottom spin is used.

3 quarter ball hit on the black

A three quarter hit means hitting the OB between half ball and a full ball, in other words 3 quarter of the ball from the side which the OB travels after contact. This angle is a good angle to keep for your shot, especially when you want your CB to travel with a good amount of follow. These shots on the black come quite often when playing for a big break around the black region. This shot on the blue, is OK if you want to open up the pack of reds. You can go thinner, towards a half ball hit, if you want to decrease the force which you want to put in the shot. But I would advise you not to go thinner than a half ball hit as that is a little more difficult to control.
A quarter ball hit can be said as the opposite of a 3 quarter ball hit, both in terms of where the OB is hit, as well as the fact that a 3 quarter shot is generally much more easier to control than the quarter ball shot. Basically, you have to hit the ball between a half ball, and a complete miss. Look at the images to know more about this shot. This shot is very difficult to control as well as pot and should be avoided in most cases. These shots can also be used to open up the pack, but let me say that these are harder than other shots which you can play in most situations. So, just think about this, when you feel that there is no other option. These quarter ball shots are difficult to control, but if you want to be a PRO, master this shot as well. You must also be able to control the CB in this difficult shot.

Thin cuts are extremely difficult to control and pot in most cases, so avoid these at all costs in your matches. Look at these ridiculous cuts on the blue. You should however practice these shots every once in a while, to know more about the angles, and to make it easier to pot them if they come up in match situations. Play the shot on the blue plain ball to make the CB travel the path as shown in the figure on the right. You can give sidespin if you want it to travel different paths after hitting the cushion, and as this is closer to an angle of 90 degrees on the cushion, you don't have to give much sidespin as well. Play the same shot with screw back as shown in the figure on the top left, to come back from behind the pink.

This other thin cut on the blue is also dangerous for your CB, unless you want to split the pack and have no other option. You can consider giving a little bit of left or right hand english depending on where exactly you want your CB to travel after the shot. Giving bottom in this kind of shot doesn't make much of a difference as the cut is very thin and the CB is not in much contact with the OB as with the other shots.

Safeties are a vital part of the snooker game. You don't normally want to end up in a situation where you have no option but to play a safety, but sometimes it just happens. In other occasions, your opponent may leave you with a safety, or even a snooker. The golden rule is to escape into the baulk, unless there are any red(s) in or around the baulk. If there are any, you can either try to land behind one of the baulk colors (if the red(s) are near the blue), or behind the blue or baulk colours (on the other side), if they are in the baulk.
You might have noticed that the above two shots are similar, but you can play any of the safeties you are more comfortable in playing. These are some tricky break-offs, the first break involves hitting the OB thin (thinner than a quarter ball), and controlling it with right or left hand english, among other things such as placing it at different points on the baulk line. All the basic rules apply. Just keep in mind that as the contact point on the OB is quite thin, you will have to hit it softer than normal. The second break is a little too ambitious for my taste, and I might try it regularly only once I have mastered the other break-offs. In fact, I don't think many players try this in tournament play. In this kind of a break, basically you hit the CB with reverse sidespin. You will have to hit it a little harder than normal so and that the effect of reverse english is nullified and the CB reaches the bottom cushion more easily.

Initial Cue-Ball (CB) position : between brown and yellow or brown and green. Try moving it towards yellow or green if you want to go more towards the side cushions after the first contact on the top cushion.

You will notice that this is quite a difficult break to master. Since this break off is played a little slow, therefore, not many reds will scatter. Now that means automatic safeties, so you might as well start with this break. Play it thin on the object ball, to come behind the yellow, either on the bottom cushion, or directly behind the yellow, leaving your opponent with a snooker. A little running english might help if you don't like to play it at speed. Play it just a tiny bit thicker and the CB should hopefully end up behind brown. play a little more thicker and try to go behind green as well, though according to me that's the riskiest shot out of the three and should be avoided.
Instead of hitting it thicker, you can put a little bit of right hand english. The CB will travel more than normal though, so keep that in mind at all costs. I would advise you not to put left hand english if you are a beginner, as that will cause the CB to stop a little in its path, and make this break even more difficult. Check out break-off 4 though, if you want to see the magic of reverse side-spin.

Snooker break - off 2 (An ambitious break with reverse english)

Power : 5-7

Spin : around half way left, a little top if desired

Contact point on OB : hit the red lying at the extreme right of the pack again somewhere between half and a third of a ball.)

Initial CB position : between yellow and brown or green and brown, more towards brown in both. Move it towards yellow or green to decrease the amount of side-spin you put in the shot.

In this case the cue ball ideally ends on the bottom baulk cushion, just behind the brown, leaving your opponent no easy shot on the next red if any is visible. Usually one red which ends at the left side cushion is pottable, but leave the white sticking at the bottom cushion and that will turn out to be a great break - off.

A little variation would be to go in between the brown and green and at the bottom cushion between the green and the reds, but this again leaves one red for your opponent to play.

When the cue ball hits a cushion with spin, unless it is perpendicular to the cushion, it will have either running or reverse english.

Running english can be defined as the sidespin which causes the cue ball to travel more, and reverse english is which causes it to travel less, among other things, like changing directions etc. This can be a complicated technique to grasp correctly at first, but if studied just a little, can become a great cue ball controlling technique for you.

Take the following 3 quarter shot on the black for example.

How would you play this??

Let us try and analyze it. Hit it with follow and a little left hand english. You will notice that the cue ball will travel towards the cushion, and you would have to play a more difficult shot on the red. If you hit it center ball, you will be okay (look at the third image) on the next red, but to be perfectly on it, you should hit the white with some reverse english. However, you will have to hit the short a little harder than normal, to compensate for the speed loss because of reverse english after the cue ball hits the cushion.

A little bit of reverse english does the trick.

So, you see, outside spin would be running english, and inside spin would be reverse english. Go to a snooker table, and with just the cue ball in hand, play these few shots.

Start from the green spot, and with a little right english, hit somewhere on the near left side rail. You will see that even with little speed (just a little more than as little as it takes to reach the first cushion), cue ball will travel more than a shot without any spin hit at the same speed. Now place the cue ball on the yellow spot. Now if you hit the near right side rail with a little left english, that would cause the cue ball to travel a little more than normal. These left and right sides which cause the cue ball to travel more are running english(s?) for the respective shots. Now try both these shots, but with opposite spins each time. You will notice that the cue ball will travel less than normal. Also try to analyze the path taken by the cue ball, it changes due to the effect of side spin. This is known as reverse english. Look at the images below. Notice how the path as well as distance travelled changes with the english. Also, the english(s?) become opposite when you hit on the other side of the table.
Now have a look at this shot on the blue, to come back for the loose red. You can put just a little bit of right hand english along with good follow, to avoid landing short on the next red. You can also play to open one of the reds in this shot, preferably the one stuck to the black, if that's how you like it, but I would take those extra 6 or 7 points first.
This next shot is rare, but is very essential to practice as when it does, can give you a chance to make good points. This is a thin cut, so, basically you put lots of screw back and a little reverse english, which would be left for this angle.

Your cue stick is your weapon. To be honest, there are hustlers and pool sharks who can play and beat almost anybody with any stick, but even they would play their best game if they use their personal cue stick.

Cue sticks come in a variety of types and sizes, suitable for people of all ages. Technologically, they are not at all the same of the sticks of the 60s or even 80s. The pool sticks of today have technologies which reduce and even nullify the squirt effect, are strong and durable, and some even remain protected from temperature changes, even if the conditions are harsh.

There are basically two types of cue sticks. Ones made for lighter balls, and ones made for heavier balls.
If you play with a snooker stick on a 10 feet pool table which uses heavy balls, you are bound to miscue and mis-hit at times when you have to use extreme draw, follow, side, speed etc. It might even break.
If you play with a heavy cue stick on a snooker table which uses lighter balls or on the english pool table, then you would notice something strange, that the heavier cue stick would produce a very high squirt effect and hence you won't be able to make some shots which you could normally at ease.

That was one important thing to consider, if you didn't already know. There are other important factors, such as the quality of ash, maple etc.

Another thing to know is that many of these sticks can come in up to 3 varieties. One piece or single cue stick, a two piece cue stick, and a three quarter two piece cue stick.

You can check out some pages I made about cue sticks on the following links.
Cue ball (CB) squirt is an effect which arises almost everytime the cue-ball is hit with left or right english. To be an effective pool or snooker player, you must know how the cue ball travels off line. Cue ball squirt is a very important thing to master if you want to bring your game to the next level, and successfully play ultra fast shots with spin.

Throw is an effect which causes the object ball (OB) to cut at a slightly greater or smaller angle, in order to make seemingly impossible shots. When you hit the CB to the right, the OB is thrown to the left and vice versa.
Do keep in mind, that when you hit fast, squirt will be highest; and when you hit slow, throw will be highest.
I will soon post an article on throw as well. Another way of saying this is at high speeds, there will be no throw; and at low speeds there will be no squirt.

For now, have a real close look at the following two images showing cue ball squirt. These images are just for demonstration of the squirt effect, as I could have easily played the red near the white using a rest. Also, all the below shots will work only at medium to high speeds.

Notice that when you hit the cue ball to the left hand side, it travels a little to the right. The angle between the path without spin and path with spin will increase with the amount of spin put and the speed. These are the two most important factors to keep in mind, and yes, do keep in mind that it always travels to the opposite side of the spin put.
Look at the following images to get a clearer picture.

A little analysis about cue ball squirt and how much it will deviate initially.

Maximum speed with maximum spin = maximum deviation

Maximum speed with medium spin = medium deviation

Maximum speed with minimum / no spin = minimum / no deviation

Minimum speed with maximum spin = very low deviation, just by increasing speed to pocket speed, you can throw the object ball which is to be pocketed FARTHEST from the aiming line. I will try to discuss it in detail sometime later.

Minimum speed with medium spin = low deviation, but good throw effect. Increase the speed to pocket speed and drop the OB and cut it at an angle, higher / lower than possible.

Minimum speed with minimum spin = low to no deviation.

Medium speed with maximum spin = medium deviation, you can use this on the break shot which makes the CB travel 4 cushions and end up on the opposite side of the first ball hit.

Medium speed with medium spin = low deviation, Use this to throw the object ball just a little bit.

Medium speed with minimum / no spin = minimum / no deviation

You can use a combination of left/right english and bottom english to throw the ball even more. Experts advise to use this shot only when required
Natural forward roll in the cue ball will cause it to roll forward, at a maximum angle of 30 degrees, for a half ball hit. This angle will decrease when the cutting angle is decreased as well as when it is increased. I think you can safely assume that the angles the cue ball makes when it is rolling and when OB is contacted anywhere between 3/4th ball to 1/4th ball, it will deflect at an angle of around 30 degrees. If you extend the line between CB and OB, the angle formed between that line and the path the cue ball takes will be roughly equal to 30 degrees.

The site describes the 30 degree range for angles between a fairly thick and fairly thin, you can try all the combinations on a real table to learn more. The only thing you would have to take into account is the part of the ball which is cut as you can see in the pictures on the above link, and as I have explained below using some basic knowledge of mathematics. The deflected angle would be greatest for a half ball hit. If you try to pot a half ball blue in the center, with natural follow, or natural forward roll whatever you like to call it, and with a speed which doesn't change the natural path of the cue ball, then the cue ball will go in off in one of the corner pockets. Look at the following image.

An in-off in the corner pocket.

I will try to explain all this using a little bit of mathematics.
Consider an angle x = 30 degrees, and an offset variable o. This offset variable is dependent on how thick or thin a curve is.
The angle which the cue ball will deflect = (x + o)
The value of o is maximum for a half ball hit, and it decreases when you cut thinner as well as when you cut thicker. In both cases, there will be a time when the offset will become very less.
Note that this is for hits between 1/4th ball to 3/4th ball.

Around a quarter ball cut, play it with slow speed and

let it roll naturally for the easy red. You will notice that
as you go thicker and thicker on the blue, the white
ball will end up more and more towards the left side
rail, and finally into the center pocket.

PS: For a thin cut, the cue ball will always travel a lot, and leave at very less angles, so it advisable to not get into that situation at all. For a shot thicker than a 3/4th ball hit, the cue ball will travel very close to the object ball path. It all depends on how thick the cut is. In both cases, thick and thin, the angle will be less than 30 degrees.
These training aids will help you a lot, especially if you are a beginner. If you are an intermediate to advanced level player and are suffering from issues such as misses at critical times, then maybe you are not hitting on your intended part on the cue ball, and practicing using these training balls and aids will help you to rectify that mistake.
This is a practice ball. If you are new to the game, this could prove to be of extreme importance. It has 5 distinct points describing 5 regions, but that is not all. Using this ball as your cue ball, you can be sure, that you have hit the point on the cue ball which you had intended to. It will help you to learn shots such as stun, follow, pull back and a little advanced shots such as top left, top right bottom left and bottom right.

This is a learning aid similar to the one above and as you can see, it has a cross at the center. You can use the lines on the cross to apply different kinds of spins. If you like, you can use points on the circle as well to make advanced shots with a combination of spins from the vertical as well as the horizontal axes.

A similar product from Aramith has a high quality cue ball, so rest assured that you can bang the cue ball all across if need be without any worries of damage to the cue ball. This works in a similar way to the products above, and also comes with an instruction booklet. This product is made from phenolic resin and has a protective coating which makes it water resistant.

This is a high quality Jim Rempe training ball set having all the points for the required spins on the cue ball. It will make you control the cue ball like the pros. It has 3 concentric circles. The central circle will let you apply just a little bit of spin on the cue ball. The middle ring, and regions inside it like HL,HR etc are for the amount of spins which are put generally. The outside ring is for extreme spins only, and it's circumference will tell you what are the miscue-able points on the cue ball.

These two balls can be of extreme importance if you want to understand half ball hits, 3 quarter ball hits, a quarter ball hit and so on. You can also be sure if you are hitting the object ball dead center using the ball on the right as the object ball and by matching it's circumference line with the pocket. Note that the circumference line divides the ball into two equal parts of different colors. If you use the stripe ball as a cue ball, it will let you see what kind of spin is there, before and after the shot. As you may have noticed in the picture above, the striped ball is divided into 3 somewhat equal parts. In the figure, it looks as if the top white part denotes 3/8 th of the entire ball, the bottom part as well. You can place the ball at different angles and try to make different kinds of cuts.

As the name says, these balls have six dots, 3 made vertically, and 3 horizonally. These can help you analyze the exact points using upto 3 visible dots at a time on the cue ball, and at the same time play a perfectly natural game of pool, 9 ball etc. This is a pack of 16 of these balls, and at quite a discounted price. These balls are made of polyester resin and are around 7-8 pounds each. Click on the picture above to know more.
It teaches you the popular 3 cut method of aiming. It shows you whether the cut is a half ball, quarter ball, three quarter ball etc. It helps you easily identify the cut by showing the contact point between OB and CB. It even shows the path of the object ball and cue ball after contact. You can hence correct all your angles and shots to play a perfect game of pool or snooker.
It also emits sounds when the aiming path changes. Recommended exclusively by former US Open champion Tom Kennedy, this product will let you correct errors such as accidentally adding unintentional side on the cue-ball or even the most dangerous error, aiming off line consistently.

Table - A snooker table is 12 ft x 6 ft, an English pool table is around 4 ft x 8 ft or 4.5 ft x 9 ft, an American pool table comes in 7, 8 and 9 ft. American pool tables generally require heavy balls than the English pool tables. I heard somewhere that certain snooker tables also require heavy balls and have huge pockets, but I'm not sure. Generally they require lighter balls, and I've been playing snooker using lighter balls for the past few years. All these tables have six pockets each, 4 at the corners, and two at the centers of the long rails. Then there are tables which do not have any pocket at all. They are used for games such as 1 cushion and 3 cushion billiards, and maybe even carom pool, if such a game exists. I could practice it all day.

Cue stick - A cue stick is used to strike the cue ball. It generally comes in 3 sizes; one piece, 2 piece and three quarter 2 piece. This can be made of materials such as ash, maple etc. It is the only weapon which you will have, but you can do wonders to the cue ball and the object ball with just the cue stick, so choose wisely.

Cue Ball (CB) - This is the white colored ball which you will strike with your cue stick. In most games, you commit a foul if your cue ball enters any cushion. You will have to control the cue ball throughout the game. You can do this using stun, roll, follow, screw back, and other shots such as stun run through, a little top side with lots of speed, to roll the cue ball just a little bit forward, etc. The list is endless. You can go one, two or even multiple rails. If you are a beginner, do not think about rails for now. Don't worry, it will come in due time. Remember one thing, that the cue ball will spin if you apply the required side, but it will start losing it due to friction as soon as you strike it. How long the spin stays depends on the speed of the shot and the amount of spin put among other factors such as how many rails the CB has travelled.

Object Ball (OB) - This is the ball which your cue ball will strike. In most of the games, you have to try and pot the OB using the CB, and then move to the next OB. Notice the acronyms, I will be using them throughout my writings. So basically, your target is the Object Ball (OB). In some games such as snooker, some object balls are replaced after a successful pot, except when no reds remain on the table.

Pot - A pot is made when the object ball goes inside the pocket, and the cue ball doesn't. It is said to be a perfect pot, when the cue ball finishes at a good distance and at the required angle for potting the next object ball and making call for the 3rd object ball. Don't think this ahead if you are just a beginner. First focus on just potting the OB. Then when you are comfortable enough (should not take more than a week), start thinking where your cue ball will land for the next shot. Play like that for a while for every shot. If you are a seasoned player and want to make bigger breaks and are not thinking at least 3 balls ahead, start doing so ASAP.

Miss - When you are not able to pot the object ball, it is said to be a 'miss'. A good miss is when your cue ball lands safe so that your opponent is not able to play the next shot easily. A perfect miss is defined when your opponent is left snookered behind another ball. It is extremely difficult to make a perfect miss, so don't even think about it if you are not a seasoned player. Instead, look at opportunities. Take for example a long red when your white is in the baulk. If it is easy, you can play it for the black. Otherwise you can come back two or even 3 or 4 cushions for any of the baulk colours. You can decide the number of cushions on the probability of the 'pot'.

Stun - If the CB travels at a path perpendicular to the path travelled by the OB, after the CB hits the OB, it is called a stun shot. It can be used to control the Cue ball all across the table. Since the path travelled is perpendicular to the one travelled by the OB, it is easy to judge its motion. After you have learnt the technique and can stun at will, you can start hitting the CB with a little follow or pullback and let the cue ball run at angles lesser than and greater than 90 degrees, thereby controlling its path even more effectively.

Follow - If you hit the CB above center, it will move forward after hitting the OB. Sometimes even if you hit it below center it will move a little forward especially on long shots. You can start practicing for a follow shot by placing the blue on its spot and the white around 4-5 inches behind it and in line with the opposite side pocket. Try to pocket both the blue and the white in the same shot and in the same pocket. Increase the distance between white and blue once you are successfully able to do for shorter distances. Then move to the longer pockets opposite to each other. Do it for all pockets to get a real feel of the table.

Pull back - If you hit the CB below center, it will come back after hitting the OB, unless all the backward spin produced is lost due to factors such as friction, speed etc. The CB cannot come back at all after hitting high on it, unless you are doing some kind of masse shot, maybe when the the 2 balls are close to each other. Start practicing for the backspin or the screw back shot by again placing the blue on its spot and the white around 4-5 inches behind it and in line with the opposite side pocket. Try to pocket both the blue and the white in the same shot and in different side pockets. Increase the distance between white and blue once you are successfully able to do for shorter distances. Then move to the longer pockets opposite to each other. Practice on all sides of the table for the optimum effect.

Natural Roll - Whenever you hit the cue ball at normal speed and a little to somewhat high english, it travels at an angle roughly equal to 30 degrees. This angle is applicable for cuts between 1/4th ball to 3/4th ball. To travel the path more accurately, you have to remember that the cue-ball deflects most when OB is hit half ball, and least when it is hit 1/4th and 3/4th ball.

Safety - When there is no clear shot to the object ball, or the shot looks dangerous, you can play a safety shot and hopefully give your opponent a difficult next shot. This will ensure that he doesn't score and maybe even give you an easy next shot. Basically you just have to clip a red, and send it towards / inside the baulk area (see below), either directly, or by making it travel multiple rails

Baulk area - Baulk area is the rectangular region behind the green-brown-yellow line. It is known as a safe area, because first it creates a distance between the reds and the white and second you have a chance of either sticking to the cushion, pocket jaws or going behind one of the 'baulk colors' to give your opponent a difficult snooker to break.

These are some more quality cue sticks from different manufacturers. These sticks have also been tested by lots of league and professional players, and will provide you and your snooker gang hopefully with years, if not decades of fun.

Some cheap yet effective cue sticks having ebony, rosewood and ash butts and sports grade ash and maple shafts by Cannon and ranging from 35$ to 50$ are good for starters in my opinion. Though not as effective as other cues in terms of various important factors such as squirt, wood quality etc., this stick is great for when you just want to have a good time with family or friends. Good if you are just starting or for practicing masse shots, jump shots, if you are short on cash :)

Peradon cues range from $70 to around $200 and come in a wide range of beautifully crafted sticks. Choose them if you would like to really customize your cue settings in such a budget. These come in ash and ebony, have better butt decorations and accuracy than the cheaper versions

If you can spend from $170 to $270, you can get your hands on Mastercraft ebony and / with ash cues. They are a little higher on quality than the Cannon cues and have more features such as choice of 1 piece, 2 piece or 3/4 piece. They also come with 6" ebony mini butts. You can customize your cue by clicking on the link below.

The next level of cue sticks is Acuerate cues which are priced from $300 to $400. Aptly priced, they have ultra low throw technology which is a result of more than 25 years of research by the legendary coach, yes you guessed him right, Chris Henry, the coach of maybe even more legends to come. These are powerful sticks, with very low cue ball squirt. These masterpiece sticks, if taken care of properly, can last you a lifetime.

You can also build your custom cue by going to Maximumbreak-snooker-store.com's custom cue designer page, for as low as $100. These are also very good cues, and will also last you quite long if you take good care of them.

All these cues are a selection from maximumbreak-snooker-com. Unfortunately, their sign up links are not working so I cannot guide you to their specific products. Let us see if in future this problem is resolved, else I can post links here from ebay or some other shop having a reputation of providing genuine goods and best price.
Abhimanyuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02538234327173508548noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5261240646736514950.post-58614207271710704322012-07-15T07:39:00.002+05:302012-08-24T04:46:59.291+05:30The drag shot.

There is a fifth basic weapon in your arsenal of positional shots. It is called the drag shot. This shot is most perfectly executed when there is just forward roll in the cue ball at the time of contact with the object ball. Well, of course it also depends on where you want your CB to come to rest. This drag shot will cause the CB to contact the OB and roll forward at an angle of 0 degrees for a full ball hit to around 30 degrees for a half ball hit.
Just simply rolling the CB in a 4 feet pot cannot be called a drag shot. You have to hit it with screw back to nullify the roll-off factor of the table. An easy drag shot would be to pot an almost straight in medium distance red and make good call for a color ball after rolling few inches, but the most difficult drag shot is when you are stuck behind the baulk, with just one loose red, on a table with bad roll-off and in no way to get in position for any colour by screwing back, follow (maybe when at an angle where in applying even a little bit of follow would cause the cue ball to travel a lot), or even applying stun.

If looking lengthwise, you are on the same side of the object red ball, then you would generally want to play this shot. Though, there are some situations when you would best play this shot even when the CB (white) is near the opposite side as the OB (red) You can also play a stun shot, and not contact any cushion, but that would just be for extremely straight pots or only slightly angled pots. Also, if there are no clustered reds behind the black, and when you want to switch the side to where the black pots, then you can come two rails for the black in the same pocket as the red. Black would always pot in the pocket opposite to the red, unless you travel to the other side, either by going behind the black (best choice), or between the black and the triangle of reds (use this only when there is no clear path behind the black. Also don't do this for angles more than half-ball. I may be exaggerating as even such 3-quarter shots are sometimes difficult to land perfectly for the black.

..Coming back to the drag shot..
It's simple, from a long distance, a drag shot can be properly played by putting backspin in the cue-ball, only to let it roll just before contact. From a medium distance, apply a little less backspin, and/or a little less speed, such that again, at the time of contact, there is just a little forward roll in the cue ball. So, you see, you avoid any roll factor in the table!! This shot becomes more difficult when the initial position of the CB is nearer to the cushions.

Learning to play this shot is simple. but to master this is quite difficult. It might come in match situations only a few times, but those situations can be match winning ones, so I would advise you to practice this technique well.

Note that you would not have to change any angles while aiming, like you would do if accounting for table roll.

Look at the following image of a shot on the blue in the corner pocket. How would you play this, with you pull the CB back and disturb the cluster of reds, or follow and come back all the way through the baulk.

Since only one red is pottable in the corner pocket shown, playing it with follow would require you to come back 3 rails for the red nearest to the bottom corner pocket, or to another loose red in the other corner pocket. Playing it with pull back would require you to hit the pack of reds and land safely either for the 1st red in the corner pocket shown, or further down for the 2nd loose red in the other corner pocket. I would choose cannoning into the reds to free more reds, but the follow shot should work just as fine, if you think your cushion knowledge is better than your cluster breaking knowledge. One thing to remember during pull back would be to send the cue ball in the group of two reds first around half ball towards right (from here), so that after it hits the first ball, it turns right (if you look from here) and hits the other red to send it to the right just a little, and you get the loose red as your prize.

What if you have to come back for the same group of reds from the brown, but unfortunately you are stuck on the wrong side of it. Now, you would have to hit a cushion at all costs, to make the next red easy. Hit it with good follow and a little left hand english, and come back after hitting two rails for the loose red, or pull it back with a little right hand english and come nearer to the red. Look at the images to know more. Which shot would you choose ?
Follow is nothing but forward motion on the cue ball after contact with the object ball. Imagine a straight forward blue from near the pink spot with a loose red in the baulk area. You will have to hit the cue ball with low to medium speed and high to medium amount of follow to get there and be able to play the red.
How do you achieve good follow? Simply put, keep your hands loose, increase the distance between your hand and a cue ball by a little bit, and hit it higher than normal to make the cue ball travel forward. When executing a follow shot, don't try to hit the cue ball harder than normal, instead, concentrate more on the amount of follow you have put. This rule can be broken if you want to break a cluster of balls, which is an advanced concept, and if you are a beginner level player, you can just skip it for now. I will try and put an article on the high force cluster breaking shot after potting the black with follow, and some other cases as well, in a few days. You can check it if you think that you know all the basic shots, and your game is good enough to move on. For now, you can look at the following images -->

The shot below is a straight forward hit on the blue to cause it to go into the center pocket. Try this shot at different speeds and different amount of follow, to cause it to just land in the pocket. Use good high english and low speed, medium high english and medium speed, and just a little high english and high speed. The next step would be to try out this shot with various other balls on the table. You can start by going in-off with the green in one of the bottom corner pockets.
This next shot is an advanced shot and one must only play it when one has crossed the initial stage of learning to effortlessly pot the OB at various angles, and when he/she is looking to make big breaks. Try this shot only when you feel that the black will go in the pocket at all costs and when there is no other easily reachable loose red. To land on a red after the shot involves a bit of luck, combined with the knowledge of where to hit the pack with the CB. Hit the triangular pack of reds on the corner (as shown in the below picture) to make the white ball stop nearby and split some reds (3-4 if you are lucky). If you hit it on the side near to the black, then you would have to hit it hard for the cue ball to come back somewhere near the center of this side of the table. If you hit it on the side of the pack which is near the top side pocket, then the white will start travelling towards the baulk, even if it somehow hits the pack. Hit this shot only when you want to clip one or two reds from the pack. Avoid this in all other situations. So the best bet would be to hit it on the corner red as shown in the picture.

Use high follow and high speed in situations when you have to make the CB travel multiple rails, and / or break a cluster of balls.

Use high follow and low to medium speed in situations when you want to ensure that the cue ball doesn't stun or stun run through, but follows like it naturally should.

Use medium follow and medium speed when you want the CB to travel medium distances, maybe even with a little bit of stun run through.

Use low follow and medium to high speed for a stun run through.

Try it out on the table. It is very easy once you get the hang of it. In my opinion it is the easiest of the three; stun, screw back and follow.

This is one of the most important techniques to master because of the way the cue ball travels afterwards. Let me explain.

The cue ball will travel in a line perpendicular to the line which joins the object ball (OB) and the pocket, after successfully executing a stun shot. Look at the following images to learn more.

the stun shot, executed, and its overhead view

If you know the line where the cue ball will travel, then that, combined with the speed of the cue ball and the amount and type of english used, and of course with some knowledge about rail paths, will give you a fair idea where it will eventually come to rest, even after travelling 1, 2 or more rails. Look at the shot executed below, which makes the cue ball travel 2 rails to come in perfect position for the red in the center. Please note, that you can add some running or reverse english along with stun to make the cue ball travel multiple rails with ease or even less (in the case of reverse english), but more on that in articles to follow. For now, use only stun and no sidespin in this shot. If stun doesn't work perfectly on the table and you end up going towards the blue or even the pink, then use a little bit of bottom to change the direction of the cue ball and let it come more towards the red.

Keep in mind that whenever it is a straight pot, it will not be called a stun shot, but a "stop shot", as the cue ball will travel very little or not at all perpendicular to the pot in any direction and just stop right there.

How do you execute a stun shot to perfection? Well basically, you have to ensure that there is no forward or backward spin on the cue ball at the time of contact. What I would advise you is to just practice hitting short to medium distance straight pots at first. Try different combinations of speed, and the amount of bottom english that you give. For starters, place the blue on it's spot, and try a straight pot it in the center. Try to stop the cue ball on the spot. Use medium speed and just a little bit of bottom english for this shot. Next try it with low speed and good amount of bottom english. Then, very low speed and extreme bottom english. Try to stop the cue ball at all times.

For short distance shots, you can either use low speed and low (or bottom) english, medium speed and a little higher english, or high speed and higher but not above center hits on the cue ball.

For medium distance shots, you can use medium speed and bottom english, a little lower speed and extreme bottom english, or high speed and some bottom english if required.

For long distance shots, use medium to high speeds only, and extreme to medium bottom english to ensure that the cue ball doesn't acquire any forward motion so that the stun shot is executed to perfection.

In my opinion, the most controllable stun shots are between three quarter ball and half ball shots. I will try to explain, say you have a quarter ball blue in the center, but the cue ball is on the opposite side such that you would have to apply stun with a little bit of draw or follow and come back 2 or 3 cushions for the reds near the pink area. Potting the blue may be easy, but consider playing for position after the pot, you will have to be very precise. It is very much make-able, let me admit, but much more difficult than a half ball blue. Also, a 3 quarter or a little more thicker blue in the center will be equally bad in this case if you have to travel through the baulk, because you would have to use a lot of force which might spoil the shot.

This shot on the black is very common. You just play the stun, go at 90 degrees to the potting line, and come back one cushion for the loose red. Now what if the red was nearer to the right side cushion? Then you would have had to play the same shot but with a little bit of bottom english and / or right hand english to ensure that you make the CB travel towards the cushion. What if it was closer to the black? Then you could have played a shot known as a stun run through. That is basically, stun, with just a little bit of follow (in order to make it run through).
The next shot is a little advanced, and it requires you to hit a perfect stun and hit dead center (or almost, if you are game enough) on the first red, so that you split the pack. Normally it's the pink which you hit, but as you might have noticed, the pink is out of play for this shot, unless you choose to pot it first. I would do that as well in a real game, finish the loose reds first and then go for the cluster break. Once you have properly learnt the stun shot, play this shot around ten times or so. You will notice that if the pink is hit half-ball on any side, the white goes in-off in the respective pocket. A good move would be to hit the reds
Like I have mentioned above, there is only one case when you will not be able to execute a stun shot, that is when the cue ball (CB), object ball (OB) and the pocket are in one straight line. This is known as the stop shot. You would have to choose to either execute pull back / follow and choose edges of the pocket to create an angle and land in the required direction.
Screw back or backspin arises on the cue-ball (CB) after it contacts the object (OB) and when it is hit anywhere between the center of the cue ball and the extreme bottom non miscue-able point on it. How much backspin it undergoes, depends on how much the cue ball is hit below center along with how much power is put in the shot. The more powerful the shot, and / or the greater the angle which you have to cut, the more the cue ball will travel along the stun path before it actually starts to screw back.

Few tips to develop good backspin action are as follows:

Put only as much power as much is required, concentrate more on the amount of bottom side put on the cue-ball. Only put full power if you know that you need full power for the particular shot.

Do not cross the miscue point.

Try out different types of backspin by hitting the cue ball at different speeds and at different locations below center.

Keep your stick as level as possible, unless the balls are too close to each other, in that case we can go for a shot similar to or perhaps a masse shot.

Keep lesser distance between your hand and the cue-ball than the distance for a stun or a follow shot.

A few things that you will notice:

The CB will not screw back at the angle at which it should seemingly come at any shot except in the case of a straight in shot.

It will take a path, known as the stun path, for a while, before it actually starts screwing back.

The more angled shot it is, the more it will travel the stun path before it starts to screw back.

The more powerful the shot, the more the CB will travel along the stun path before it actually starts screwing back.

The path of the cue-ball after contact after playing a successful snooker backspin shot can be analyzed as under.

You will find that for any angle except for a straight pot, the cue ball will curve, but only after a while. The distance travelled before it screws back will be directly proportional to the angle at which you have to cut.

1. Straight pot
In this case the CB will come straight towards you. You will see that, it comes exactly straight, unless you hit it on the edges of the pot to create an angle. Now, if you put some side along with the bottom, it will travel different paths, but only after hitting the cushion. I will try to discuss that later on.

2. Half ball pot

In this case the CB will travel to the opposite side of the pot at an angle close to 90 degrees to the line joining it and the OB, .

Now here you will see that the cue ball will start curving only after it has travelled some path perpendicular to the line joining the O.B and the pocket. This path is also known as stun path, and is one of the most important things to master in cue ball sports, but more on that later on. So after travelling that little stun path, the CB will start to curve at an angle of 90 degrees to the line joining the initial positions of the CB and OB.

3. Angles in between

The path will be in the area between the line joining the initial positions of the CB and the OB; and the line perpendicular to it, at the opposite side of the pot. Simply put, it will screw back more for thicker hits and at less for thinner hits. Here also, the cue ball travels the stun path, more for thinner hits and higher speeds.

For example, this three quarter ball hit, with good amount of screw back, will make the cue ball travel along the path shown

4. Thin cut
In thin cuts, there will be little to no screw back on the CB. It will also take very long to start to screw back. As you go thinner, there will be a point when it will be impossible to screw back. So you see, it is always advisable to avoid thin cuts at any cost, but if you are in that situation, keep a lookout on the white as best as you can.

There are three basic types of backspin :

Slow to medium speed, and high to extreme backspin, useful for short to long distance shots, when you want just that little bit of perfect screw back. Notice that to achieve backspin at longer distances, you would have to increase the speed and / or the backspin put

High speed and high to extreme backspin, useful for potting the OB and screwing the CB to a particular faraway point on the table.

High speed and very little to medium backspin. Use this on shots where you have to either come behind the stun angle, and then make the CB travel few or more cushions. You can use this shot when you want little screw back, but are afraid of the nap effect of the table, or when the table is bad.

Try these out on the table. And always remember that with proper knowledge and practice, you will be able to do all this and more maybe without even looking.

This game is not about playing a few powerful shots and trying to impress everybody with just a couple of shots. It is about making points and not letting your opponent get out of his seat, except when you have left him snookered or left the cue-ball tight on the cushions. Well, this would be the ideal case and then you would be able to defeat everybody, but I think you get the point ;)

You can score a maximum of 147 points in the game, excluding fouls. If you start with a free ball, then you can very well score 155 points in the break.

How to play snooker.
You have to play and try to pot a red ball (worth 1 point) at the start of every shot, followed by any colored ball of your choice from yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black ( these 6 balls are worth 2 - 7 points starting from yellow - 2, till black - 7.) Then another red, and another color. This process is repeated throughout the game, until there are no reds left on the table. Then you pot the colors in order from yellow till black for a total of 27 points. Whenever you miss, it is your opponent's turn. Every shot you play will be started by playing a red ball first, unless your opponent fouled in the previous shot and you are left with a snooker or cannot see the ball-on properly.

Basics

Bridges

V-shaped bridge

Curly bridge

Rail-Bridge (Tight situation, everyone fears it)

Over the ball bridge

Pocket bridge

This is such a game that even someone who makes a score of just 20 in almost every turn can defeat anybody, if his safeties are extremely good.
Likewise, a player, who even makes big breaks in every game may easily lose to an opponent if his safeties are not good.

Let me tell you that I can give you tips on how to play snooker, if you are a beginner, intermediate or an advanced level player. I myself can say that I am an advanced level player and yet to reach the expert and master levels. I usually make 30-35, with OK safeties (I have made 70-80 at times and sometimes my safeties are great as well).

Stay tuned to know more.
In one shot, I have cleared american tables around 20 odd times, where as the smaller tables with smaller pockets look a bit tougher most of the time..
Though I have stopped playing pool nowadays and I am concentrating more on snooker.
How many times have you cleared the pool table...?
Abhimanyuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02538234327173508548noreply@blogger.com0
